Committee Purpose
It’s easy to be unaware of accessibility barriers. The isolation that an access barrier may cause may not be readily evident. Respect for the dignity of others is the foundation for all of our efforts to carry the message to alcoholics with diverse needs, emphasizing identification rather than how we are different.
Accessibility challenges apply to all alcoholics who have difficulty participating in Alcoholics Anonymous, whether they are mental, physical, geographic, cultural or other factors that might vary. These can present barriers to accessing the A.A. message, including literature, meetings, Twelve Step work and service. For the purposes of this committee’s definition of the accessibility issues that many alcoholics face, we prefer primarily to persons who experience:
- Hearing/vision loss including deaf and blindness
- Chronic illness
- Brain injury or stroke effects
- Intellectual and or developmental disabilities and diverse abilities
- Mobility issues
The vision of the Accessibility Committee is to work in close collaboration with other districts and key committees to improve our effectiveness in serving alcoholics who face barriers to accessing the A.A. message, helping them to carry the message to other alcoholics, and providing powerful examples of the possibility of achieving sobriety in spite of access barriers.
